Us and Them Film
Filmed over a decade, Us and Them is a deeply visceral film about transformation through human connection.
It begins when filmmaker Krista Loughton is questioned by addiction expert Dr. Gabor Maté about her need to relieve pain in the world. This takes her back in time, when she befriended four chronically homeless people in an effort to help them heal their lives.
These four charismatic people reveal the heartrending realities of their lives. The severe challenges of life on the street are portrayed with an unapologetic openness, in both emotive and humorous ways. All are struggling with addiction issues rooted in their painful childhood histories.
Krista finds a mentor in Reverend Allen Tysick, a street minister who dedicated his life to serving the poorest of the poor. Watching him build a new facility for the street community inspires her to create change in her own way.
Years ago, she had been introduced to the First Nations Medicine Wheel and its success helping former addicts maintain recovery. Under the mentorship of Hereditary Chief Phil Lane Jr., she decides to teach her friends how to balance on the Medicine Wheel. They learn to take stock of themselves physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally, in an attempt to help balance and heal their lives.
In the beginning there is connection and hope, but unfortunately at the end of their time working with the Medicine Wheel, none are able to conquer their addictions nor substantially change their lives. And then tragically, one dies.
Out of her league, Krista seeks out the counsel Dr. Maté, who forces her to confront her own motivations. Krista confesses her own emotional struggles with her remaining street friends. They display an extraordinary empathy and wisdom no one could have anticipated.

Affordable Housing Introduction
Affordable housing aligns the Ministry of Provincial Housing Mandate and the Poverty Reduction Strategy. Social housing and affordable rental housing must be available for individuals and agencies seeking homes for clients. Providing shelter is not acceptable if the occupant is unable to have a healthy living environment and acquire affordable utilities. The emergency shelter, transitional and supportive housing needs versus the current inventory have created barriers restricting access within the communities.

Henry Wall, Kenora District Services BoardWorkforce Introduction
Skilled labour attraction is hampered by residential availability for both the rental and ownership markets. Without housing, industry and new economic growth is impossible. Regions attracting skilled tradespeople in mining, construction, healthcare etc. are compensating with a commuting employee base. However, restrictive transportation options and availability diminishes the commuting employee base. Additionally, training for individuals seeking skills for new jobs is impacted by lack of available housing for both trainees and trainers.

Green Housing Concept for Communities – Greentings from Finland
Since 2009 in Kempele, Finland, has small a small modern community produced own electricity and heat by local forest biomass. The whole concept was built from scratch to achieve maximal functionality. This Kempele Eco-Village has developed a concept, which could be modified for Canada, especially for communities away from large urban business districts and without direct access to cheap energy, like gas.
Dr. Sikanen introduces the Kempele Eco-Village idea and explains the concept of local wood utilization in housing from wood buildings and energy production point of view. He also scouts partners to cooperate with in the adaptation of the concept in Canadian operational environment.

Climate change encompasses energy efficient strategies to new and existing housing to reduce heating and cooling costs. The expense of delivering basic utilities is rising disproportionate to wages, especially in underserviced communities, like Sioux Lookout. New technology and energy sources must be explored, created and expanded responsibly. Housing must be constructed utilizing the most cost effective technologies and requiring the lowest possible maintenance. Consideration must be made for delivery to underpopulated areas. In Northern Ontario, the cost of delivering hydro often exceeds the kw hours of electrical use. At the same time, provincial government constrains municipalities from accessing funding programs and alternate energy sources based on population and consumption, including wood use, solar power and other alternate sources. Land use planning discusses municipal restrictions for housing development and infrastructure development and meeting the cost of infrastructure demands.
